Effective Altruism Movement

At Mangoes to Share we believe in Effective Altruism Movement.

What is that???

According to Wikipedia – Effective altruism is a Philosophy and a Social movement that applies evidence and reason to determining the most effective ways to improve the world. Effective altruism encourages individuals to consider all causes and actions, and then act in the way that brings about the greatest positive impact, based on their values.

Effective Altruism is basically changing the way we are doing GOOD in the Wolrd

Quoting straight from the Effective Altruism Project Website:

“Effective altruism is about answering one simple question: how can we use our resources to help others the most?

Rather than just doing what feels right, we use evidence and careful analysis to find the very best causes to work on.

But it’s no use answering the question unless you act on it. Effective altruism is about following through. It’s about being generous with your time and your money to do the most good you can.”

There are so many things that can be done to make this world a better place. There are infinite causes to support, projects to initiate and choices to make. We are often faced with the dilemma of wanting to help someone but not knowing how to do it.

This is where Effective Altruism steps in. It helps us to pick causes that bring the greatest positive impact with lowest resources necessary. Often we don’t need much to help. Just a seed capital of $25-$30 to start a small business can change the life of the whole family.

Imagine if the life of that family is changed and parents are able to send their children to school to get educated and therefore to be able to positively influence their own environment in the future, instead of turning to crime or war for solutions. If we  look at the big picture the potential impact of those $25 is immeasurable.

Here is a perfect example shown by the Lovatt Foundation applying this principle in the way they help Internally Displaced People In Nigeria. In the past couple of years the Lovatt Foundation, through their Emergency Care, IDPs Project, has helped over 500 people to relocate, open their own businesses and start new lives with very little funds. Only $135 per family covers rent, clothes, essential items, and a small business start-up capital for 6 months! The program has a lot of success and most of the people become self-sufficient again within those initial 6 months.

When “helping” is done right, meaning when the funds are not spent on the red tape, corrupt government functionaries, outdated development models made by big NGOs, and other wasteful outlets, little resources can go a long way, particularly in very poor areas.

That is why at Mangoes to Share we focus on helping in a SMART way, we pick projects and partnerships with like-minded organizations and explore grassroots fundraising methods as well as our community connections to do the best possible good with the least resources.
